A new EU review published in February shows that progress is being made towards the EU’s biodiversity commitments under the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. According to the assessment, the EU is on track to reach several of its 2030 targets, and some have already been achieved. However, the report underscores that efforts need to accelerate if Europe is to safeguard the ecosystems that support water security, food production, climate resilience and human wellbeing. The publication highlights that healthy ecosystems are not only vital for nature but also essential for the stability of Europe’s economy and communities.
The report draws attention to the need for faster implementation of existing policies, stronger restoration efforts and greater coordination across Member States. It also notes new EU initiatives introduced in recent years, including strategies on water resilience, ocean health and the bioeconomy, all of which aim to strengthen nature positive action. As the EU and its Member States prepare for the next global biodiversity review later this year, the call for more ambitious and better coordinated restoration work has become increasingly clear.
Trees4Adapt contributes to this wider effort by generating practical evidence on how tree-based solutions can support biodiversity recovery and strengthen resilience in different European landscapes.
