Case Studies

Trees4Adapt’s three purpose-built case studies test different types of tree-based solutions in real management settings. In Finland, the focus is on diversifying boreal production forests to improve resilience to pests, storms, and drought while supporting biodiversity and services like berry and mushroom production. In Germany, the project evaluates agroforestry systems by studying the integration of trees with crops to assess productivity, risk reduction, and co-benefits for soils, water, and habitats. In Portugal, the work centres on post-fire recovery, comparing management options for rebuilding resilient, biodiverse landscapes under increasing wildfire pressure.

Across these sites, partners collect ecological, microclimate, and socio-economic data, and assess performance against local risks and objectives. The evidence flows into Trees4Adapt’s economic analyses (WP3) and Europe-wide modelling (WP4), helping to show when and where each approach is most effective and how it can be scaled or adapted to other regions with similar challenges.
